October 2004
It's the small everyday occurances that keep me motivated always and looking toward the future. I will give you an example: Bentley Farnsworth. Here's a dude who took a single summer out with P. Diddy in St. Tropez, holding the Bad Boy's umbrella for the world to see and record. And today? Bentley's television and contributing editorial deals plus the press he gets (including this mention in The Drama) is getting him to the next level. An umbrella! Now, if that isn't a motivator with your work in music entertainment I don't know what is!
I'm rushing to finish the column and get onto packing the promo luggage for H.U.S.T.L.E. 2004 conference in New York this week. It will be great to try and catch up with so many people over there and check the Jean Grae, Jinx Da Juvy, Black Sheep, and Guru showcases, plus follow up on our national search for DJs on a european club tour proposal the Crazy Pinoys have been working on. Nasty Nes and his conference team are looking to bring back what conferences are really about, showcasing emerging and legendary talent, and opening up networking opportunities. See you there.
So what exactly are we packing? Let's start with EA Sports NBA Live 2005, the Def Jam vinyl for Fight For NY soundtrack featuring Layzie Bone, Potluck from northern California featuring E 40 and Living Legends, Noc Rage and their spankin' new single, REVOLUTION, and Noc On Wood Records next mix cd from the "Oh So Fab" Noc On Wood studios, downtown Seattle. We hope to break a big distribution announcement soon for them and be the first to leak the who, the what, the how and you already know where!!
When you look at Seattle's music history closely there are many ways to compare the Jazz scene of the 40's to what goes on today. Back then artists would come out for weeks and months at a time to work, feature, be seen, connect and play. Billie Holiday, Ray Charle, and Charlie Parker are examples. Today, it's names like Bushwick Bill, Money B, one or more members of Beastie Boys, Dres from Black Sheep, Big Syke, members of Bone Thugs And Harmony, and more who make pilgrimage to the region. Why should you care? If these artists find the region important so should your sorry ass! Take pride in what your Northwest markets offer. Producers, MCs, venues, studios, marketing companies, vendors of all kinds, editors and talent of all stripes exist up here, so do something!!
BUZZ FOR OCTOBER: New Lenny Kravitz club (NY), tour drama with R. Kelly, Howard Stern taking satellite radio to next level, Manchurian Candidate style wire in president's jackets during debates (www.isbushwired.com), I.D. implants for nightclubs, Source Magazine/Russell Simmons war, Lloyd Banks in Seattle October 13th, 40 million dollar house offer in Seattle, new Dave Chapelle hotel (Dream NY).
WANKSTER FOR OCTOBER: Kobe Bryant. How you ever came up with Shaq's name during a police interrogation is beyond the beyond. What Shaq does or doesn't do with his private life won't help a situation your butt is slinged in. Why bother? Was he there? Damn, even if he had a case in the same state how do you compete with yours by comparing his alleged behavior? Does your wife know you rolled over twice now?
LET ME CLEAR MY SHOUT: Melissa @ Quest Field Seattle, Gaylene @ EA Sports, EQ @ H.U.S.T.L.E. 2004, Eric @ Capo Entertainment (nice seeing you in traffic, is that your car? damn!), all the DJs participating with our Athens proposal, Amir @ Pak Pros, Omari @ Definition Marketing, Bobby Spoons (keep that Potluck project hot for us ), Kitty Wu @ Cool Out Network, Deb @ Glam Media and the staff @ Trader Joe's in Madison Valley, Seattle!
